Specific Phobias

There are 7 diagnostic criteria for specific phobias according to the DSM-5: Marked fear or anxiety about a specific object or situation. In children, fear or anxiety may be expressed by: crying, tantrums, freezing, or clinging.

The DSM-5, categorises specific phobia into four types, including:

  • Animal (e.g., dogs, cats, cockroaches, snakes),
  • Blood-injection-injury (e.g., injections, blood tests),
  • Natural environment (e.g., heights, thunder & lightening, water, storms),
  • Situational (e.g., public speaking, enclosed spaces, driving, airplanes) and
  • Other – a fifth category, which includes phobias such as fear of vomiting or choking which do not fit
into one of the four categories above.

Sonia’s high success rate with all categories of specific phobias is as a result of her taking an integrated
approach – one that she has developed over the years. Clinicians may download (free) from the Practitioner
Portal her clinical paper (published 2018) on this approach.

Success Stories For Specific Phobias

FEAR OF ENCLOSED SPACES – FEAR OF TRAVELLING ON TRAINS & PLANES

“Hello Sonia, Just wanted to send you a quick email in regards to all my travels since our sessions. I flew on six flights since I left Perth that includes the long flight to Hawaii. I felt great and though for a split second I thought about the enclosed space the feeling quickly disappeared and I felt fine. I am still practising the breathing technique each day. Thanks again for the sessions and I look forward to my happy travelling on planes and trains.”

FEAR OF ELEVATORS + FEAR OF FLYING

“Just a quick note to say that I did brilliantly flying to Hawaii. No problems at all. The two sessions I had with you really worked, for both the fear of flying and the fear of elevators. Thank you for all your help. Sincere Regards.”

FEAR OF ENCLOSED SPACES – FEAR OF TRAVELLING ON TRAINS & PLANES

“Hi Sonia, after my sessions with you for my fear of flying, I had no issues with any of my travels. It’s been wonderful. My life has improved in other ways too. It’s as if the freedom I now have with flying has impacted other areas of my life. I now have more confidence in myself to do things I was previously afraid to do. Thank- you so much.”
