Eating Disorders

If you have been diagnosed as suffering from an eating disorder, such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, then these will require us to provide you with specific hypnotherapeutic interventions aligned to current measures being taken by you and co-ordinated with clinician(s) treating you. If you are under psychiatric care, a referral letter from your psychiatrist is required. For these conditions we would have you take the MDTL Model™ Therapy Program originally developed for Anxiety Disorders, yet highly effective for eating disorders because of the overlap between these conditions, such as specific anxieties and fears around the eating disorder, which are to be alleviated.

Weight issue (not a diagnosed eating disorder)

Whether it is excessive weight or an inability to gain weight, whether the cause(s) are known or not, hypnotherapy can most definitely help. Where a diagnosis has not been forthcoming, hypnoanalysis can be used to identify the cause(s) though this may not be necessary to resolve the issue.

The unconscious, (which resides within every cell of your body), has its own reasons for holding onto weight or refusing to put on weight. The reasons are brought to the surface through hypnotherapy and recognised as sabotaging ones that may have served a purpose in the past, such as comforting you in a past trauma (which became hidden in your unconscious). As these sabotaging beliefs (both conscious and unconscious), are recognised in and out of hypnosis and released, new and more empowering beliefs are imprinted into the your unconscious so that you leave knowing that your weight issue has been permanently left behind in the past. All sabotaging and unhelpful thoughts, feelings, emotions and behaviours, which have become habitual, are addressed and replaced with beneficial life-affirming beliefs.

These are some of the areas that will be customised as required, in your hypnotherapy program :

  • Constant or frequent thoughts of eating
  • Optimising awareness to the triggers around eating i.e. Emotional eating – take our emotional eating quiz (EEQ) to clarify those feelings and emotions which are triggers for eating or snacking when you are not hungry. This information will be used in your program/sessions when you decide to turn your life around with a new slimmer, fitter, healthier version of you. Addictions, cravings or urges for specific types of foods i.e. sugar addiction, cheese etc
  • Overeating or snacking in certain situations, with certain people at certain times of the day i.e. evening when home alone, stressful situations, when no one is looking, picking at food whilst preparing it etc.
  • Inability to do ‘normal’ exercise due to a medical condition
  • Lack of joy, energy and/or motivation to exercise
  • Inability to stick to an eating or/and exercise plan
  • Sluggish metabolism (not necessarily as the result of a diagnosed medical condition)
  • Anxiety over how others see your body shape or weight incl. body image and/or a lack of confidence
  • Awareness of the time/ period in your life when you started putting on weight
  • Specific (and realistic) S.M.A.R.T. goals you wish to achieve i.e. to be …. (waist size or body weight or image of self in a particular outfit etc.) By… (date - perhaps of a special occasion)
  • An inabilty from past experience to maintain a lower weight i.e. weight control

Weight Gain

Whilst wishing to ‘loose weight’ is more common amongst clients that come to our practice, an inability to ‘gain weight’ can often be successfully treated with hypnotherapy. Even when the inability to gain weight is associated with a medical diagnosis such as cancer or diabetes, hypnotherapy has been scientifically proven to be effective for weight gain. Depending on the diagnosis, this may involve for example, using hypnotherapy to stimulate and maintain a healthy appetite or strenghthen the immune system or to restore harmony and so healthy functioning of specific bodily tissues/ organs.
